Learn baseball tips at McCoy stadium
      A free baseball clinic will be offered to children on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. PawSox manager Ron Johnson, coaches and several PawSox players conduct the popular youth baseball clinics on the field to offer youngsters instructions and tips on the game.

Magic show coming to library Aug. 12
      Magician Chris Carbone will perform for children at the Jamestown library on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The performance is the final event in the children's summer reading program, "Catch the Reading Bug," and will begin at 4 p.m. The show is geared to children ages 4 to 10. Registration is not required.

Dance benefit supports Alzheimer's foundation
      Exercise the mind and body at the "Dance to Remember," on Wednesday, Aug. 13, beginning at 6 p.m. at Easton's Beach Rotunda in Newport. Several well known local dance instructors will teach and lead various forms of dance, including standards such as tango and rumba to more modern styles like Latin funk and zumba.

Ida Lewis' heroism portrayed at library
      The Rhode Island Sea Grant and the Jamestown Philomenian Library are co-sponsoring an appearance by actress Marilyn Murphy Meardon in a solo performance of "Ida Lewis: Rhode Island's and America's Most Famous Lighthouse Keeper," on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m.

History of sports on display in library
      Summer sports are the focus of the new exhibit in the Jamestown Historical Society display case in the lobby of the Jamestown Philomenian Library. See what girls wore to go swimming in the 1890s. Sailing and canoeing also had special clothing. Fishing gear and pictures of the catch will make the modern fishing enthusiast wonder.

'Art around the Bay' show opens Aug. 7
      The Conanicut Island Art Association will kick off its new show, "Art around the Bay," with an opening reception Thursday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Town Hall. Catering will be provided by Trattoria Simpatico. This is the first CIAA show where exhibiting artists do not have to be a member of the association.

'Run' to library for next book group
      The next book to be read by the book groups at the Jamestown Library will be "Run" by Ann Patchett, on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 1 p.m. There will be no evening discussion in August. Booklist gave "Run" a starred review. "The question of what makes a family is central to this luminous novel, Patchett's first since her award-winning "Bel Canto" in 2001.
