Virginio F. Bettencourt, 81

Virginio "Gene" Figueiredo Bettencourt, 81, of Jamestown, died July 25, 2008.

He was the husband of Laura Rezendes Bettencourt, to whom he was married for 56 years.

Born in Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal on Dec. 6, 1926, he was a son of the late

Vitorino Andrade

and Maria St. Antonio (Figueiredo) Bettencourt. He immigrated to Hartford, Conn., in September of 1952 and settled in West Hartford until he retired.

Prior to his retirement, he was a Master Carpenter from Local Union 43 and as a skilled carpenter, he built his home in Jamestown. He truly enjoyed his retirement years gardening and spending time with his family.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Hartford, and a founding member of the Holy Ghost Portuguese Society, East Hartford.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Maritana "Tanya" Guadalupe, and her husband, Ventura of Newington, Conn., a son, Jeffrey Bettencourt, and his wife, Cecilia of West Hartford, and four grandchildren, Marissa and Kimberly Guadalupe, Andrew and Lauren Bettencourt. He also leaves a brother, John of Taunton, Mass. and a sister, Helena of Hartford, as well as several other extended family members.

Gene was predeceased by his brothers, Manuel, Jose and Antonio and sisters, Amelia, Isaura, Filomena, and Adelina.

The funeral was Monday from the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home in West Hartford. Burial was in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield, Conn.
