History of sports on display in library
Summer sports are the focus of the new exhibit in the Jamestown Historical Society display case in the lobby of the Jamestown Philomenian Library.
See what girls wore to go swimming in the 1890s. Sailing and canoeing also had special clothing. Fishing gear and pictures of the catch will make the modern fishing enthusiast wonder. Scorecards and pictures tell the story of the three golf courses that have operated on the island, the first was built in 1895.
Sports have always been an important way for both seasonal and year-round residents to spend their time in summers in Jamestown. Enjoy the pictures of the sports played in the past.
All the items in the exhibit are selected from the JHS collections.
