Learn to be a tree steward this fall
      The Rhode Island Tree Council will offer a course on becoming a tree steward at the Jamestown library starting in September. The course will cover tree biology, tree identification, tree planting and pruning, tree health, urban forestry and soils.

'Cranky Yankee' gives book talk
      The South Kingstown Public Library will present local author Virginia Leaper with her new book, "The Cranky Yankee," on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. Anyone with New England in their blood will enjoy these vignettes about hurricanes, clambakes at the farm, walks by the sea and reminiscences about the Fourth of July and Christmases past.

      University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners will hold an open house at their Vegetable Demonstration Garden at East Farm on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free, public event is designed to give visitors practical information on how to design, build, plant and maintain a successful vegetable garden.

Time running out to get fund-raiser tickets
      Jamestown's Chamber of Commerce's annual fundraiser is being held at Fort Getty on Friday, Aug. 15, at 6:30 p.m. The recipient of this year's proceeds is the Jamestown Community Theater and the event is appropriately named "Gettywood" and will feature a Hollywood theme.

Perry kicks off senate campaign
      A rally fund-raiser to officially kick off the Donna Perry for senate campaign will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Portuguese American Citizens Club, 138 Narragansett Ave. Radio host John DePetro, Perry's brother, will co-host the event.

      The annual Jamestown Talent Show: "Salute to Vaudeville" is set for Wednesday evening, Aug. 13, at the Recreation Center. The show, a fund-raiser for the Jamestown Community Chorus, starts at 7 p.m.

Join library friends for a harbor cruise
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library invite the public on a two-hour harbor tour onboard the Amazing Grace, on Thursday, Aug. 14. The boat will load at the East Ferry at 3:45 p.m. for a cruise of Narragansett Bay. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar is available. Tickets are limited to 75 people and are $28 each.

      The annual meeting of the Jamestown Historical Society will take place on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the library. A business meeting and election of officers will begin at 7 p.m., and then guest speaker Dr. Robert Thorson will give a talk at 7:30 p.m.
