Recycling talk set
      The Quononoquott Garden Club invites the public to hear a representative from Rhode Island Resource and Recovery talk on the "Importance of Recycling" at the Jamestown library on Monday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m. This green program should interest everyone with concerns about the environment.

Julio DiGiando, father, teacher, and civic leader
      Julio J. DiGiando has lived in Jamestown for more than three decades. He bought property, built a house with his father, and raised a family here. He has played an important role in community affairs, sitting on various committees, commissions and boards since the early 1990s and last year was voted Town Council president.

Tennis winners announced
      Members of the Jamestown Recreation Department Ladies Doubles Tennis Clinic Beginner Division held a mini summer sizzler tournament. The top four high individual scores were used to determine the teams in the finals. The class used the Van Allen Scoring System.

      Registration for the Fall 2008 recreation soccer league is now underway. The process for registering a child is done online only, by accessing the Jamestown Soccer Association (JSA) registration forms from the Jamestown Soccer website at www.jamestown-soccer.com.

Swain will stand trial for murder in Caribbean
      Former Jamestown Town Council member David Swain, 51, has been committed to stand trial in a British Virgin Islands court for the 1999 murder of his wife, Shelley Tyre. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court sitting at the High Court, in Road Town, Tortola will try the case on a date yet to be announced.

Police force takes part in impaired driving crackdown
      The Jamestown Police Department is taking the "You Drink & Drive, You Lose" campaign one step farther. The department is participating in an "Impaired Driving Crackdown" on Aug. 8, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. with 11 other coastal communities.

Underage drinking is never okay
      Last Wednesday's Forum on Teen Drinking, hosted by the Teen Center, conveyed a clear message: underage drinking is never okay. The panelists included Robin Monica, mother of Jeff Monica who died in a 2003 car accident while under the influence of alcohol, Officer Mark Esposito from the Jamestown Police Department, State Rep.

Volunteers needed for elderly, children
      Child & Family Services has an immediate need for Friendly Visitors who visit the homebound elderly on a regular basis. There are elders confi ned to their homes in Tiverton, Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport who are waiting to be matched with a volunteer. These seniors have very few social contacts and would welcome a visit from someone who cares about them.

Nominate big trees for 'champion' status
      The Rhode Island Tree Council recently announced that it is accepting tree nominations for the Helen Walker Raleigh Champion Tree Program. Begun in 2006, the champion tree program promotes awareness of the contribution trees make to quality of life by finding and profiling the biggest trees in Rhode Island.

      Montoya earns law degree Michael J. Montoya of Mount Hope Avenue graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern Law School in Boston on May 25. Smith graduates from URI Kevin Smith of Beacon Avenue graduated cum laude May 18 from University of Rhode Island with a bachelor of science degree in marine biology.
