Domestic multiple charges

Jeffrey McCooey, 28, of 807 North Main Rd., was charged July 31 with domestic disorderly conduct, domestic vandalism with malicious injury to property, and domestic simple assault and battery after police received a call from neighbors that they could hear screaming and yelling coming from the residence, police said.

McCooey was taken to the police station and transported to Newport District Court where he was arraigned, police said.

Drunk driving charged

Edward Coughlan, 36, of 149 Hamilton Ave., was charged Aug. 3 with first offense drunk driving and refusal to submit to a Breathalyzer test after he was stopped on Route 138 west for speeding, police said.

Coughlan was taken to the police station where he was arraigned and a pre-trial hearing was scheduled for Aug. 15 at Newport District Court, police said.

Drunk driving and possession of

alcohol by a minor charged

Zachary Merritt, 18, of North Kingstown, was charged Aug. 4 with first offense drunk driving with a blood alcohol content over .15 percent, and possession of an alcoholic beverage by a minor. A witness called police after watching Merritt's car hit a rock while leaving Beavertail State Park. The witness also reported seeing alcohol on the ground in the area. Police responded and found three adult passengers under the age of 21 in the car with Merritt. The passengers were also suspected of drinking. The car was severely damaged and alcohol was recovered in nearby woods, police said.

Merritt was held at the police station overnight and he was arraigned at Newport District Court the next morning, police said.

Drunk driving and refusal to take

a Breathalyzer test

Jason Kerbel, 18, of North Kingstown, was charged Aug. 5 with first offense drunk driving after police responded to a report of a vehicle rollover on Tashtassuc Road.

There, they found Kerbel with a juvenile passenger in the car, police said. The passenger was taken to Newport Hospital with minor injuries.

Police said Kerbel appeared to be intoxicated. When they took him to the station, he was also charged with refusal to take a Breathalyzer test, police said.

Kerbel was held at the police station overnight and was arraigned the next morning at Newport District Court, police said.

Bench warrant

violation charged

Asi Ewud, 48, of Newport, was charged Aug. 4 with a 4th District Court bench warrant violation after police ran his plate and stopped him on Route 138 west, police said. Ewud was held overnight at the police station and was arraigned the next morning at Newport District Court, police said.
