Military families' ice cream social
      The Jamestown Military Spouses Group will hold a "Welcome to Jamestown" ice cream social on Friday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at 830 East Shore Rd. New military families, Jamestown families who volunteered to be pen pals for the incoming group, or anyone who wants to meet the newcomers is invited to attend.

Join the library friends for a harbor cruise
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library invite the public on a two-hour harbor tour onboard the "Amazing Grace," today, Thursday, Aug. 14. The boat will load at the East Ferry at 3:45 p.m. for a cruise of Narragansett Bay. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar is available. Tickets are limited to 75 people and are $28 each.

Annual art exhibit of CIAA opens Aug. 20
      The Conanicut Island Art Associate (CIAA) has announced that Kathleen Hancock, gallery director of the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery of Bristol Community College in Fall River, will be juror for its 34th annual art exhibit. The show will open Wednesday, Aug. 20, with a reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It will continue daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Sunday, Aug.

Get ready for the fall season with soccer camp
      Fall soccer season is just around the corner and now is the time to brush up on those neglected skills. British Challenger Soccer is bringing its camp to Jamestown Monday to Friday, Aug. 18 to 22. Half-day camps for ages 4 to 14 are $120, and full day camps for 6 to 14 year olds are $170. Both sessions include a ball, T-shirt and parting gift. Morning sessions are 9 a.m.

Historical society to hold annual meeting
      The annual meeting of the Jamestown Historical Society will take place today, Thursday, Aug. 14, at the library. A business meeting and election of officers will begin at 7 p.m., and then guest speaker Dr. Robert Thorson will give a talk at 7:30 p.m.

Teen center hosts movie about refugee camps
      The Jamestown Invisible Children Team will show the movie "Sunday: The Story of a Displaced Child," on Friday, Aug. 15, at 8 p.m. at the Jamestown Teen Center. This movie depicts a child's life inside an internal displacement camp.
