She taught English and math to kindergartners while she was visiting. Tarik Kassa is from Ethiopia and will be spending the rest of the summer in Jamestown. More ... Jamestowner Deb Ruggiero plans to blog about her experience next week as an elected delegate from Rhode Island at the Democratic National Convention. The Town Council held a public hearing at Monday's meeting regarding amendments to the general rules and regulations of the Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners. After discussing the rules governing water conservation during the summer months, the council proposed to change the dates for water restrictions in Section 15A. More ... Bright sun and blustery conditions provided the perfect setting for Bill and Alice Porter to punctuate this year's Fleet 12 Championship with a pair of wins. While this week's wins were only their second and third of the year, the Porter's USA 1533 was a model of consistency, never finishing worse than third. More ... Jamestown's two Competitive U12 Soccer Teams announced in the Press last week are up and running. Under 12 players, who were born between Aug. 1, 1996 and July 31, 1998, interested in playing quality competitive travel soccer against neighboring towns this fall are encouraged to participate. More ... Islander Megan Greene is wrapping up a busy summer and can now call herself a junior Olympian. Greene was a member of the field hockey team at the Junior Olympics held in Detroit, Michigan recently. Greene has been participating in the Futures Program for the past two years. More ... Chairman Michael de Angeli at the Aug. 13 Harbor Management Commission meeting announced that Marine Resources Specialist Kevin Cute from the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) again requested to come to Jamestown to talk to the commission. More ... The Jamestown Military Spouses Group will hold a "Welcome to Jamestown" ice cream social tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at 830 East Shore Rd. New military families, Jamestown families who volunteered to be pen pals for the incoming group, or anyone who wants to meet the newcomers is invited to attend. More ... Recently someone took two ratty old green resin chairs from a bus stop in the Jamestown Shores. The School Committee welcomed the Town Council at its annual retreat held Aug. 14 at the Senior Center. The groups heldinformal discussions on how they can work together to accomplish common goals. The Friends of the Jamestown Library and the Jamestown Historical Society will present "Memories of the 1938 Hurricane" on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at the library. Lopes had her picture taken with the driver of a horse drawn car in Killarney, Ireland, while on tour there with her grandmother and aunt this summer. More ... The 31st Annual Fools' Rules Regatta will be held this Saturday, Aug. 23, on the Town Beach at East Ferry in Jamestown. The rain date will be the following day. As always, the cannon will be fired at 9 a.m. to begin construction of the "vessels," and entrants are allowed two hours to construct a sailing craft out of non-marine items on the beach. More ... |
