Plenty of fools in Jamestown
      Jamestown has no shortage of fools, if the turnout at this year's 31st annual Fools' Regatta is any indication. The Town Beach provided beautiful backdrop for a seemingly endless procession of fools.

Coastal design lovers bring surf home with the Endless Wave table
      Surf style is up and local architect Ron DiMauro is on its crest with his new innovation, the Endless Wave table. A combination of surfboard and wave, the coffee table adds a sparkling accent to seaside homes. DiMauro has a knack for turning his dreams into reality and has built a career around his love of the sea.

URI brings help to community farm
      A busload of University of Rhode Island student resident assistants and their supervisors arrived at the community farm on the old Eldred Avenue last Saturday morning. The students contributed three hours of their time pulling weeds, tilling soil, and doing other farm chores.

Off to grad school
     Melissa Minto said goodbye to teens from the Jamestown Teen Center, who came to wish her well and show their support. Minto was presented with a proclamation from the Town Council for her support as a mentor and a role model for the youth of Jamestown.

Storyhour at library begins next week
      Weekly Preschool Story Times will resume at the Jamestown library on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to meet for Mother Goose Time and Story Time in the children's room on Wednesday mornings and most Friday mornings.

Computer help by appointment at library
      The Jamestown library has an ongoing program of computer assistance to members of the Jamestown community. Monday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Robert Edgar, a retired information technology specialist, is available at the library to provide help with questions regarding home computers.

Get books today: library closed this weekend
      The Jamestown library will be closed for the entire Labor Day weekend from Saturday, Aug. 30 to Monday, Sept. 1. Reopening will be on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. The library's regular hours are Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Men's chorus takes the stage on Saturday
      The Men's Chorus of Jamestown will present its 16th annual summer concert, "The Men's Chorus Greatest Hits!" this Saturday, Aug. 30. The 20-voice chorus is directed by B.J. Whitehouse. The family-friendly concert will feature music from Russia, barbershop, glee standards and arrangements of folk songs.

New school year hours for Teen Center
     The Jamestown Teen Center will begin its school-year hours starting Monday, Sept.1 at the Recreation Center, 41 Conanicus Ave. School-year hours will be Monday through Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 2 to 9 p.m. All teens in grades 7 through 12 are welcome to register with the program. Town Beach closes Monday
      The Town Beach at Mackerel Cove will close officially on Monday, Sept. 1 — the last day the beach will be staffed with lifeguards. There will be lifeguards on duty for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1. After the beach closes, residents may still swim, but should plan to do so at their own risk.

New choral season getting started
      New voices are invited to join the Jamestown Community Chorus for their 2008-2009 season. Rehearsals for the holiday concerts begin Sept. 15 at the Central Baptist Church, at 99 Narragansett Ave., from 7 to 9 p.m., and continue each Monday thereafter. There are no auditions; everyone is welcome.

Around-the-Island race Sunday
      The Conanicut Yacht Club will host its annual Around-the-Island Race on Sunday, Aug. 31, starting with the small boats at 11 a.m. There will be an informal barbeque and awards ceremony for sailors and their guests following the race at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20, payable by cash or check, at the door.

Newport Navy Choristers need new voices
      The Newport Navy Choristers are seeking new voices in all vocal ranges for the upcoming 2008-2009 season. The Navy Choristers are a mixed choral group open to all members of the Newport Navy community, including active duty, reserve and retired military, their spouses and family members 16 years of age and older. All Civil Service employees are also welcome to join.
