Deputy fire chief has spent two decades with department
      Deputy Fire Chief Ken Gladding has been with the department for more than two decades. "I love being a fireman. Once it gets in your blood, you can't quit," Gladding said. Gladding, 42, is a Jamestown native and has only lived outside Jamestown for six years. "I guess I had to go to Florida to meet my wife, Fran. She was working at the First Union Bank in Jacksonville.

Full disclosure: I never go to the beach
      Whenever I tell new people I meet that I live in Jamestown, they always make one of two assumptions about me. The first is that I must go to the beach "all the time" and the second is that I must sail. "Oh, isn't that great," they say, followed by "how close are you to the beach?" I reply honestly that I am less than half a mile away. "I can even walk there," I tell them.

Golf tourney to benefithose with disabilities
      Bridges Inc. will hold its second annual Golf Classic on Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth. The tournament is a scramble format that will begin at 11 a.m. It will include a raffle and silent auction as well as dinner and awards. All proceeds for this fund-raising event will be used by Bridges, Inc.

Ferguson plays in Prague Lacrosse Cup
      This was no ordinary summer for islander Sydney Ferguson. She was a member of a United States Under-19 lacrosse team that competed in the Prague Cup in the Czech Republic from July 9 to 12. The USA team won beating the Czech A Team 14-7 in the finals.

Summer camp
     The Jamestown Lions Club contributions support these campers from Camp Mauchatea, a camp for blind and visually impaired children. Mauchatea means 'be my guide' in the Narragansett language. The camp has been in existence for eight years and guides Rhode Island's blind and visually impaired on the journey to adulthood.

Clifford, Hoagland to wed next year
     Dan and Colette Clifford of Braintree, Mass. announce the engagement of their daughter Colleen Dinette Clifford to Christopher Post Hoagland, son of Peter and Susan Hoagland of Jamestown. The bride-to-be is a graduate of Tabor Academy, in Marion, Mass. and earned her bachelor's degree in from the University of Vermont in 2005. She is employed at New England Controls in Mansfield, Mass. as an account manager. The groom-to-be is a graduate of Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich, and earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Wheaton College in 1999. He manages the Inventory and Logistics Department for Evans Capacitor Company in East Providence. The couple is planning a fall 2009 wedding.

Sunflower contest winners announced
      David Urban, proprietor of the Secret Garden on Southwest Avenue, announced the winners of the 12th annual sunflower growing contest last Sunday. Winners in four divisions won ribbons for growing the tallest plants as well as the largest blooms. The grand prize winners were also given $10 Secret Garden gift certificates with their purple ribbons.

      Michael and Mary Harder of Hailey, Idaho, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Heather Elizabeth to Nicholas Robert Brown. He is the son of Robert and Nancy Brown of Cody, Wyoming. Heather is the granddaughter of Edward F. and Barbara Morinho of Jamestown.

      September is supposed to be a time for winding down from a busy summer. This September seems to be busier than the summer itself. House tour weekend Our annual house tour fundraiser is a weekend affair this year. On Friday, Sept. 12, members of the society are invited to a preview party at Birdview, 28 Newport St., from 5 to 7 p.m.
