South County Welcomes Home Dr. Aaron Weisbord, Cardiologist
      A real native of South County, Aaron Weisbord, M.D., was born at South County Hospital, grew up in South Kingstown and graduated from South Kingstown High School. After leaving the state to pursue educational and professional goals, he is now returning to serve his home town as a physician, joining South County Cardiology Associates on Kenyon Avenue in Wakefield.

He caught the reading bug
     Philip Reilly, of Jamestown, was named an All-Star reader in the "Catch the Summer Reading Bug" summer reading program at the Jamestown library. Reilly won tickets to a PawSox game at McCoy Stadium. New winter basketball league forming now
      The Jamestown Recreation Department will offer an over-35 recreational basketball league starting Wednesday, Oct. 1. The league will be held every Wednesday from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. through May 1. The cost is $30 per person and registrations are available at the Recreation Center, 41 Conanicus Ave.

Blood drive this Sunday at Holy Ghost Hall
      There will be a blood drive on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holy Ghost Hall on Narragansett Avenue. The drive will be sponsored by the Arnold Zweir Post 22 of the American Legion and Memorial Post 9447 of the VFW.

Fund-raising event for Shaffer scheduled
      On Aug. 15, longtime Jamestown resident Charlie Shaffer died after having been diagnosed with cancer just three weeks earlier. Charlie was a self-employed master carpenter specializing in fine finish work. He was also a driver, for special events and on Saturdays, for the Conanicut Marine Services shuttle bus.

Crime scene investigation topic of teen center talk
      The Jamestown Teen Center will start a new series called "Speakers and Sundaes" on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m. at the Teen Center. The first speakers in the series will be from the RI State Crime Lab and the Jamestown Police Department to discuss crime scene investigation.

Naturalist talks about Antarctica at CBC
      Prentice K. Stout, a noted Rhode Island naturalist and author, will present a natural-history lecture about his travels to Antarctica at 11 a.m. on Sept. 21, at Central Baptist Church. Stout, who spent more than 50 years in the teaching profession, was a marine education specialist at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography for almost 20 years.

Singing opportunities for adults and children
      It's not too late to join the Jamestown Community Chorus for its December concert rehearsals. Rehearsals began on Sept. 15 and will run until December. Sopranos, altos, tenors and basses are needed to work on the chorus 2008 December program "Fall Into Winter.

      The Jamestown Shores Association will sponsor a "Meet the Candidates" night on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Senior Center at West St. at 7 p.m. Candidates presenting for the office of Rhode Island State Senate are Senator M. Teresa Paiva- Weed and Jamestown resident Donna Perry.
