Disaster drill a success because of volunteers

Many thanks to all who participated in the RIEMA Disaster Drill on Saturday, Sept. 13. The drill was a simulation of needing to open our Melrose School shelter as a result of the effects of a hurricane.

The drill was a great success due to the collaborative effort of the Jamestown Red Cross Shelter Team, Jamestown Fire Department, Jamestown EMS, Jamestown Police Department, volunteer evaluators from the Jamestown Recreation Department and great actors from the Jamestown Teen Center. Other residents also turned out to provide scenarios requiring special assistance.

Thank you, too, to Village Hearth Bakery, Slice of Heaven, Trattoria Simpatico, Spinnaker's and Ace's Pizza who kept us fueled throughout the day.

The shelter functioned well with just a skeleton crew of Red Cross volunteers. If you would like to become a Certified Red Cross shelter team member (minimal time required, maximum satisfaction), please contact Chief Tighe at 423-1212.
