Eve Mills Kelley, 85
Eve Mills Kelley, 85, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., died Aug. 7, 2008 at Hilton Head Hospital.
Eve was born June 22, 1923 in Louisville, Ky. Her parents were Raymond Peter Mills and Kathryn Baldwin Mills. She moved to New York City and lived permanently with her grandmother, Ann Eve Walsh, when she was 13.
In January 1942, she graduated from George Washington High School in New York and then attended Columbia University, where she also worked for four years.
Her professional career spanned duties from assistant to the managing editor at Doubleday & Company to general editor/ advertising coordinator with American Institute of Chemical Engineers. She also performed similar duties with Sperry Marine, Instrument Systems Corporation, Educational Developmental Laboratories, Communication Associates Inc. and the Sunday Digest in Huntington, N.Y.
Eve spent most of her adult life on Long Island, N.Y. She remained a member of Centerport Yacht Club until her death. She also was a member of Caloosa Yacht & Racket Club in Fort Myers, Fla. and the Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.
Eve Kelley was a "woman of the heart." She loved her country, her family, sailing and the water. She lived life to the fullest; as close to the water as she could get. She cherished her friendships and was revered as "Chicken" by her adopted Naval Academy Dinghy Sailors (NADS). She was preceded in death by her husband George Kelley, brothers Jack and Bert, and many dear friends in Long Island N.Y., Fort Myers, Fla. and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Kurt, her husband and their sons, Cem and Kaan Peter; her son, Peter Hyers, his wife and their sons, Patrick and Christopher; cousins, Jean Marie Purcell, Bob and Suzanne Purcell, Martha Mary and Bob Hart, and Karen Purcell Roley.
As requested, her ashes will be sprinkled in Huntington Bay, Long Island, N.Y. She will be dearly missed.
