Local glassblowers on exhibit in Newport
      David and Jennifer Clancy, from Clancy Designs in Jamestown, will be exhibiting their work as part of the "Glass & Paint" show at DeBlois Gallery in Newport. There will be an opening reception for the show on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. and the show will run through Tuesday, Oct. 28.

URI seeks graduates for homecoming
      The University of Rhode Island's Alumni Association is seeking members of the Class of 1978 to participate in 30th reunion activities during Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 17 and 18 on the Kingston Campus. Festivities include a Friday night bonfire and fireworks, and dessert gathering at Hope Commons following the fireworks.

Evergreens needed for holiday mansion décor
      With the Christmas season just around the corner, the Preservation Society of Newport County is looking for large, live evergreen trees to help dress up the grounds of the Newport Mansions for the holidays. Large exterior trees strung with holiday lights are a hallmark of the annual holiday decorations at the Newport Mansions.

Chorus looking for some musical kids
      A youth chorus will be part of the chorus' 2008 December holiday concert "Fall Into Winter." The concert will focus on music that represents the time between the onset of autumn and the December holidays. Young singers, ages 8 to 16, are invited to sing starting on Monday, Oct. 6 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

Youths to experience homelessness Saturday
      St. Matthew's Youth Group, which includes those ages 12 to 16, will set up a "tent city" on the St. Matthew's property the night of Saturday, Oct. 4 as part of their year-long program of helping the homeless and the hungry. To kick off the season and gain perspective on homelessness, the kids will arrive at St. Matthew's at 3 p.m.

Abstract art featured in new CIAA show
      The Conanicut Island Art Association is beginning a new season with its first exhibit of abstract art at the Jamestown Town Hall Gallery. The "Abstracts in the Fall" show will open tonight, Thursday, Oct. 2, with a reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments provided by Trattoria Simpatico.
