Dr. Jerome H. Shapiro, 84
Dr. Jerome H. Shapiro, 84, of Boston, died Oct. 14, 2008 in the Veterans Hospital, Bedford, Mass. from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was the beloved father of Wendy Shapiro and father in-law of Dr. Arthur Spivack of Jamestown.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Shapiro was the retired chairman of radiology at the Boston University School of Medicine and radiologist-in-chief at Boston City Hospital.
He served in the Army during World War II and received his medical degree from Yale University following his discharge. He was president of the Massachusetts Radiological Society, the New England Roentgen Ray Society and the American College of Radiology. He received the American College of Radiology's gold medal in 1992 and a gold medal from the Radiological Society of North America in 1996. Dr. Shapiro served as president of Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, Mass. from 1968 to 1972.
Beyond his medical career, his passion was music and he passed this on to his children. He was the first violinist and president of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra. He was particularly proud of a program he initiated for the donation of musical instruments to the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
The funeral will be held at Temple Beth Elohim, 10 Bethel Road, Wellesley, Mass. on Friday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. Daniel Stepner, concertmaster of Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra, will play violin music by J.S. Bach.
