Historic ferry sign on display at rec center
      opened on June 28, 1969, the way to get to Newport from Jamestown was by ferryboat. From as early as 1675, sail ferries serviced the route and in 1873 steam ferries of the Jamestown & Newport Ferry Company began operation from East Ferry. Very little tangible evidence remains to remind today's visitor why the area at Narragansett and Conanicus Avenues is called East Ferry.

Piano concert slated for Sunday, Nov. 2
      The Jamestown Community Piano will be featured on Nov. 2, at 4 p.m., as pianists from the University of Rhode Island music department will perform at St. Matthew's church. The concert is the second of four concerts planned by the Jamestown Community Piano Association for the 2008-2009 season.

Pie cook-off kicks off Taste of Jamestown
      Central Baptist Church will kick off its yearlong Seasonal Taste of Jamestown series with a pie cook off on Saturday, Oct. 25. The cook-off is open to everyone in the Jamestown community and pies of all types will be accepted for judging. Entries are due at 1 p.m. the day of the contest.

Learn ballet basics in beginner adult class
      Mary Beth Murphy is offering a Beginner Ballet class for adults on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Jamestown Golf Course. No previous experience is required for this introduction to ballet basics. It is designed for anyone who has always wanted to dance, or who may have danced as a child and wants to give it another try.

      Fire department to hold open house Oct. 25 The Jamestown Fire Department will hold an open house Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 2 p.m.Attendees will have an opportunity to talk to the all-volunteer department's Membership Committee and learn about how to join and how to help. The department needs help with fire department committees and other business related functions.
