Say thanks to island volunteers

We would like to thank each and every volunteer involved with the Jamestown Fire Department and the Jamestown Emergency Medical Service (JEMS).

Let no one take our volunteers for granted. These people go through rigorous training to qualify for their jobs. That training is required to be ongoing for many positions. They are on call 24 hours a day, seven a days a week to help Jamestown residents when there are fires, car accidents and other emergencies. They offer consistent, quality service to anyone who needs it. They serve because they are inspired and dedicated— nothing more.

Many of these volunteers assist each year with Jamestown events including holiday activities, the Penguin Plunge, the Rotary Bike Race, art fairs, Fools Rules Regatta and the Memorial Day Parade and educational programs at our local schools.

Every volunteer takes the time to keep us all safe. Our volunteers take their job seriously, conscientiously, and with pride. Each delivers a service critical to the wellbeing of Jamestown residents and visitors. Each one deserves the acknowledgement from all of us, the residents of Jamestown.

Many years ago, we formed as a group whose sole purpose was to acknowledge these volunteers, to help recruit and to advocate when necessary. Many of you joined us then, and we hope you will join us now in thanking these well-trained, volunteer citizens. When you see them in the neighborhood, in town or their place of work, stop and say thank you. It's important that they know they are appreciated.

From all of us, a big thank you to everyone who serves in the Jamestown Emergency Medical Service and the Jamestown Fire Department. We applaud you.
