Breakfast to benefit veterans, seniors
      A family breakfast in support of Seniors Helping Others and South County's veterans will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Elks Club in Wakefield. The breakfast will run from 8 to 11 a.m. and guests are asked to bring items for soldier-care packages. To learn what items are needed for the care packages, visit www.southernrivol.org.

Holiday program spans the seasons
      The Jamestown Community Chorus will hold their annual December holiday concert, "Fall Into Winter," on Saturday, Dec. 13 and Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Central Baptist Church. The theme of the concert will be unique.

Thanksgiving feast set at library
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library will host a re-creation of the first Thanksgiving on Sunday, Nov. 23, from 2:30 to 4:15 in the library meeting hall. Children can come in traditional costumes if they wish, enjoy a pot luck feast and make holiday decorations to bring home for their own Thanksgiving feast.

Self-defense for women offered by police dept.
      The Jamestown Police Department is offering a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Class for women of all ages. The four-day class will be held from Nov. 17 to 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Jamestown Recreation Center, 41 Conanicus Ave.

Broadway on stage in Jamestown Nov. 15-16
      Broadway is coming to Jamestown and, not surprisingly, the longtime director of the Jamestown Community Theater, Mary Schachtel Wright is behind it. Never one to squander an opportunity, Wright struck up a friendship with Broadway actor/ singer/dancer Jon Peterson after seeing him perform in "Half a Sixpence" at Goodspeed Theater in Connecticut this past summer.

      Jamestown resident Aidan Petrie is co-chairman of Save The Bay's The Bay Bash: The Light at the End of the Tunnel, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 15, at The Foundry in Providence. The event honors the Narragansett Bay Commission and celebrates the completion of Phase 1 of the Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO) project.

      The Jamestown Philomenian Library will be closed in honor of Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11. The library's regular hours are Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Veterans' service honored in ceremony Tuesday
      The island's veterans' groups will commemorate Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at East Ferry Veterans Memorial Square. The keynote speaker will be former Gov. Bruce Sundlun, who will discuss the history of the day that was initially established as Armistice Day, which remembered the signing of the treaty that ended World War I.

Donate blood and toys this holiday
      The Rhode Island Blood Center is teaming up with "Toys for Tots" from Nov. 8 through Dec. 7 to assure that underprivileged children in Rhode Island are remembered during the holiday season.
