North Kingstown and Jamestown youth play in flag football tourney
Players and coaches from the North Kingstown Recreation NFL Flag Football League recently participated in the New England Patriots NFL FLAG tournament. The tournament, part of the NFL FLAG National Tournament of Champions, drew teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. More than 40 teams participated in the tournament on Sunday, Nov. 2 at in Waterbury, Conn.
North Kingstown Recreation NFL Flag Football League, Rhode Island's sole representative in the tournament, fielded three teams. Coaches John Humphreys and David Arnold led the 12- to 14-year-old boys team. Aaron Thomas and John Chadwick, of Jamestown, coached one of the 9- to 11-year-old co-ed teams while Keith Croteau and Greg Pilgrim coached the other team in this division. All three teams did a great job of representing North Kingstown in this competitive event that featured tremendous skill and sportsmanship.
Developed by the NFL, NFL FLAG offers a non-contact version of traditional football to more than 100,000 boys and girls across the country. Until this year, Rhode Island was one of only five states without an NFL Flag Football League. The North Kingstown Recreation Department NFL Flag Football League just completed its inaugural season with more than ninety players, aged 8 to 14 years, playing on ten teams. All games were played on Friday nights, under the lights at Ryan Park.
