Skating rink opens in Newport
      On Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. the Sovereign Bank Skating Center at the Newport Yachting Center opens for the winter season. In addition to a regular schedule of skating opportunities, the center will offer lessons for both children and adults beginning in early January. Each program runs for six, 45-minute sessions.

Prout school to present Christmas program
      On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Prout School will present its annual Christmas Show featuring a classical ballet performance of "The Nutcracker," by Tchaikovsky followed by performances from all members of the music department. The Nutcracker will last approximately 40 minutes and will be followed by the Christmas concert with a ten-minute intermission between shows.

Keep warm - learn to salsa this winter
      The North Kingstown Arts Council is offering a way to warm up the winter months. Take Salsa dance lessons on Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. beginning Jan. 17 for three weeks. The classes make a great holiday gift and the cost is $30 for North Kingstown residents and $40 for non-residents.

Winter art show looking for entries
      Rhode Island artists are invited to submit their work to the Conanicut Island Art Association's upcoming show titled "32° Degrees." This non-juried show is open to non-members and offisland residents as well as to current art association members.

Mittens, hats collected at town hall for women's center
      With the expectation of a cold and long winter ahead, the staff at the Town Hall will start collecting mittens, scarves, hats and gloves for the annual holiday Mitten Basket. Items for the basket will be accepted as of today. Donations can be made Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will benefit the Newport County Women's Resource Center.

Engraved ornaments for town tree for sale
      Jamestowners can see their name in lights this Christmas by purchasing an ornament for the town's Christmas tree at East Ferry. A donation of $25 to the Tree Lighting Ceremony helps defray the costs of the annual ceremony, including refreshments.

      The Jamestown Philomenian Library will have a winter book sale in the gallery hallway at beginning Tuesday, Dec. 2 through Monday, Dec. 8, during regular library hours. Some little used and much loved volumes will be available at great prices.

      For those who have ever read a book review and wondered just what the reviewer was thinking, join the Friends of the Jamestown Library as they present writer Lisa Palmer for "Inside the Mind of a Book Reviewer," on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the meeting hall at the Jamestown Library.

Chorus to add youthful voices to program
      The Jamestown Community Chorus will present its "Fall Into Winter" program in two concerts on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec.14, at 3 p.m., at the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., in Jamestown. Advance tickets are available at Baker's Pharmacy, Jamestown Hardware, and the Secret Garden. Tickets will also be available at the door.
