Skating rink opens in Newport

On Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. the Sovereign Bank Skating Center at the Newport Yachting Center opens for the winter season.

In addition to a regular schedule of skating opportunities, the center will offer lessons for both children and adults beginning in early January. Each program runs for six, 45-minute sessions.

On Friday, Dec. 12, the skating center holds its annual tree lighting ceremony from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. including caroling, hot chocolate and a skating Santa Claus.

Admission to the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children between 3 and11 years of age. However, there are nightly specials, including Amica Family Night on Wednesdays, where everyone can receive $2 off regular admission and a free cup of hot chocolate, and Stop & Shop Supermarket Night on Tuesdays where admission is 2-for-1.

A $2 discount is also available on College Night, for those 18 years and older, with a valid college ID. This happens on Thursdays and features live music.
