Chamber Chatter

Thanksgiving is here, and Christmas and Hanukkah are just around the corner. The Chamber, along with some individual members, will be hosting some wonderful holiday events during the month of December.

By Vicki de Angeli By Vicki de Angeli The Chamber is pleased to announce something new to kick off the holiday shopping season in Jamestown: the Chamber Check Give-Away. While visiting the downtown stores over the Thanksgiving weekend, enter the Chamber's raffle to win $100 in Chamber Checks. Chamber Checks are like a gift certificate or traveler's check— they function just like cash, and can be used to purchase goods and services from many of our member businesses. No purchase is necessary to enter this give-away, and the winner will be drawn Monday morning after Thanksgiving. For a complete list of the locations of the entry boxes, check the ad in today's Jamestown Press, or the Chamber Web site, www.jamestownrichamber. com.

The annual Chamber Holiday Party will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at Trattoria Simpatico. Tickets are $35 per person and include dinner, dessert and music by Dave Manuel. There will be a cash bar. This event is only open to Chamber members, their spouses, and employees. For reservations and additional details, please see the Chamber Web site.

The Teddy Bear Tea, a favorite annual holiday event in Jamestown, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 14, also at Trattoria Simpatico. Peter Brockmann, of Brockmann Law Associates, and his wife, Michaela, will be hosting this wonderful event. Children ages 5 and up are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear or doll for an elegant afternoon of cocoa and cookies. This very popular party sells out each year, so be sure to buy your tickets early. There will be two seatings, at 1 and 3 p.m. Tickets will be available Friday at Jamestown Designs and Conanicut Marine Ship's Store.

The Polar Express Trolley will be running on Saturday, Dec. 6, courtesy of Baker's Pharmacy. Take a magical trolley ride through Jamestown while singing carols and listening to a reading of Chris van Allsburg's "The Polar Express." Make a final stop at Jamestown's very own "North Pole" to see Santa. The trolley will leave from East Ferry every hour on the hour, beginning at 11 a.m., with the final trolley of the day at 4 p.m. This event is a favorite of children and adults alike, so be sure to buy your tickets early, which are available at Baker's Pharmacy.

Jamestown is very fortunate to have many local businesses involved in the community. These merchants are generous with their time, talent, and money to create these wonderful holiday experiences, as well as many others throughout the year. As the holiday shopping season approaches, please remember to visit the many Jamestown merchants that sell a wide variety of items - you're sure to find something for everyone on your list. What a pleasure to do business with a local merchant and friend, rather than an anonymous big box store!

The Chamber is continuing to move ahead with its "Buy Jamestown" initiative - whereby Jamestown residents will be encouraged to patronize local service providers, shops and restaurants. In these diffi cult economic times, it has become even more critical that we are aware of the importance of having all these terrific providers of goods and services right here on our island. Please continue to support them so that they can continue to serve us all. Look for details on this exciting new program over the next few months.

Chamber chocolates are back! These delicious chocolate squares depict the Newport Bridge in either milk or dark chocolate, and are available at many downtown shops. When picking them up to give as gifts, don't forget one for yourself.

Chamber of Commerce annual memberships expired Sept. 30. Although many businesses have renewed, there are still many more businesses on the island that need to send in their renewal memberships. If you have not already done so, and would like more information, or simply need a form, please go to the Chamber Web site, www.jamestownRIchamber. com. The Chamber receives many inquiries all year for recommendations and referrals, and along with your membership, your business will be listed on the Chamber's Web site. The Chamber hosts social networking events that are only open to Chamber members.

For further information on all these events, visit the Web site, or contact Donna Olney Kohler, executive director, 423-3650, or info@ jamestownRIchamber.com.
