People need your help to heat their homes

The Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund announces that the 23rd annual "Warm Thy Neighbor" campaign is now underway.

Major Doug Burr, the state coordinator of The Salvation Army of Rhode Island, which administers the fund, said sponsoring energy companies presented their annual donations at the recent campaign kickoff. The monies will be put to use immediately to help Rhode Island families in temporary crisis pay their energy bills. The Good Neighbor campaign's 2008-'09 goal is to raise $600,000 and help 1,750 families.

Major Burr said, "Having been in this position for more than a year now, I've seen firsthand the positive impact the Good Neighbor Energy Fund program has on families who are doing their best to make ends meet. As expected, we're seeing a rise in calls for energy assistance and from many people who have never had to ask for help before. With this in mind, we're asking Rhode Islanders to make a donation of whatever amount is comfortable for them."
