Documentary focuses on violence

The documentary Rhode Island Voices on Violence, Perspectives on Peace, which was produced and directed by North Kingstown resident Mari Dias will be shown at the North Kingstown library on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.

The documentary is a product of a student community service learning project conducted by Johnson & Wales University John Hazen White School of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the Institute for the Study and Practice of Peace and Non-Violence.

Featuring a series of interviews with individuals who represent various facets of society, the film seeks to shed light on the questions: "What causes violence?" "What are effective interventions?" and "Whose responsibility is it to teach non-violence and peace keeping strategies?"

Interviewees include Teny Gross, executive director for the Institute; Institute street-workers; A.T. Wall, director of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections; Judge Francis Darrigan; maximum security inmates; and Ann Burke, mother of Lindsay Ann Burke, whose daughter's death was a result of dating violence.

Admission is free, however, space is limited.
