POLICE LOG

Multiple charges filed

in late night fight

Michael Cabral, 19, of 950 East Shore Rd., was charged May 4 with driving to endanger resulting in personal injury, failure to assist in a motor vehicle accident with a pedestrian, and leaving the scene of the accident ,after police picked him up on Highland Drive, police said.

William Marsh, 21, of 30 Lawn Ave., was charged May 4 with simple assault in the same case after he was found at the scene of the accident on Highland Drive.

Cabral, Marsh, and a third man, who was not charged, allegedly spent an evening on the town in Newport and returned to Jamestown about 1:30 a.m. According to police, Cabral and Marsh got into an altercation on the way back to Jamestown and Marsh left Cabral's car, saying he would walk home. Cabral drove away and took the third party home to Cedar Hill Drive. Then Cabral returned and found Marsh not far from where he dropped him off. They again got into an altercation and Cabral ran to his car to get away from Marsh. When he drove away, his Jeep brushed against Marsh, knocking him to the ground. Cabral allegedly ran over Marsh's leg, police said.

When police arrived at the scene, Marsh was on the ground and Cabral had fled. Marsh identified Cabral and police later found him walking on Highland Drive. Marsh was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

The two men were held at the Jamestown Police Station until the next morning where they were arraigned by a justice of the peace. Marsh was given a pretrial hearing date of May 9 at Newport District Court. Cabral was charged with multiple felonies and the case is being presented to the Attorney General's office at Newport Superior Court. Both men were released on their own recognizance, police said.
