Create a field guide at children's workshop
      Children can create their own field guide at a new workshop at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum's Green Kid's Club. Join the club for an afternoon of nature study with the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society. Children will explore a variety of nature printing techniques and create a hand-made nature field guide. Each field guide will be unique and individual.

New winter hours at the Press
      The Jamestown Press has new winter hours effective Wednesday, Jan. 14. The Press office will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will close at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Guys and girls movie nights at teen center
      The Jamestown Teen Center will host movie nights for the "ladies" and the "fellas," starting Tuesday, Jan. 13. Jamestown teens have selected movies with an important theme to show at the Teen Center. The first "Ladies Night" is on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Recycling calendars now available
      The Town of Jamestown has teamed up with the Jamestown Press to publish a 2009 recycling calendar. The calendar contains beautiful photographs by Jamestown residents, lots of recycling tips and information, and the recycling and transfer station schedules.

Intergenerational volleyball league in session
      The Jamestown Recreation Department will host an open-play intergenerational volleyball program on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lawn Avenue School gym. The league is open to teens and adults. Netters are encouraged to come ready to play. The league is not instructional. For more information, contact the Jamestown Recreation Department at 423-7260.

Student art to hang in hospital gallery
      Jamestown School student artists will display a range of two-dimensional art at the South County Hospital starting today, Thursday, Jan. 8. A reception to honor the artists will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. This exhibition will hang for approximately six months in the main corridor gallery.

'The Cave' to be read by book groups
      The next book to be read by the Jamestown Library Book Discussion Groups is "The Cave," by Jose Saramago. The group will discuss the books on Monday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. According to a review from Amazon.com: "José Saramago is a master at pacing.

Rec basketball starts this Saturday
      Jamestown youth basketball will kick off this Saturday, Jan. 10. The league is for boys and girls in grades 4 to 8. Games will start at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Residents who have not registered their children may do so on Saturday morning.
