Help kids learn about finances with free coin counting

BankNewport invites children from the Newport County area to the BankNewport Portsmouth branch on Saturday, Feb. 7, to have some fun while learning about finances.

"Kids Count Coin Counting Day" will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the bank's lobby at 2628 East Main Rd., allowing children to turn coins they have saved into cash using the branch's coin counting machine at no charge.

During the event, kids will be invited to pour change they have saved in coffee cans, glass jars, or even dresser drawers into the coin counting machine. They will then bring their receipt to a bank teller and receive their savings in cash, along with a free BankNewport sports water bottle or piggy bank to encourage them to continue saving. Light refreshments will be served.

The children will also be invited to open their own savings account with their parent or guardian to deposit their saved cash each time their piggy bank is full.

"It is important to teach children the value of money as early on as possible, particularly during the difficult economic times that we are all facing," said BankNewport Portsmouth Vice President/Branch Manager Linda Buchanan. "Getting kids into the habit of saving a portion of their money as they receive it builds critical money management skills for their future. It is our hope that with events such as these, we will help to successfully instill in children positive money management skills that will stay with them for years to come. The free BankNewport Piggy Banks are one added reminder for them to keep saving!"
