Coletta and Newport hockey team named state champs

By Stephanie Heelan Cotsonas

Islander and Lawn Avenue School fifth grader Michael Coletta and the Newport Whaler Squirt A hockey team made history on March 1 and won the RI Amateur Hockey Association State Championships. They upset the powerhouse CLCF team from Cranston, 2-1, in overtime at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket. They won their semi-final game, 6-5, in double overtime.

Capturing the state title qualifi ed the Whalers for a berth in the New England Regional Championships last weekend, where they represented the state as the "Rhode Island 1" team.

Newport was eliminated after the quarterfinals, but finished in fifth place overall, which according to Head Coach Mike Coletta was "a huge accomplishment considering there are hundreds of teams and they were the Rhode Island State Champions."

The Squirt division consists of 10 and 11 year-olds. The Whaler Squirt A's can be seen this weekend in Newport's St Patrick's Day Parade.
