St. Mark K of C crown free throw champions

Six boys and girls from Jamestown, ages 10 to 13, were named local champions of the 2009 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the right to compete at the state level.

There was no district level held for the southern RI region this year. The local competition was held on Feb. 7 at the Lawn Avenue School gym and was open to all youth ages 10 to 14.

Robert Haberland, hitting all five extra shots, won an exciting shootout over Giancarlo Varrecchione to become the 10-year-old boys' champion.

Stella Hackman was the 10-year-old girls' champion and Jordan Smith was the winner of the 11-year-old boys' division.

In the 12-year-olds' bracket, Kristjana McCarthy was the girls' champion and Antonio Varrecchione was the boys' champion. The 13-yearold boys' division was won by Jared Ford. Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contests.

Each of these winners will compete in the state level free throw championship to be held at Bishop Hendricken High School on Sunday March 22 at 1 p.m.
