Girls take first place in travel tournament

By Adrienne Downing

Sometimes patience and hard work pay big dividends, as was the case last week for the Jamestown U10 girls' travel basketball team.

Islander Julie Maguire, along with Sue Gaynor and Kevin Deacon, formed the girls' team and entered it in the North Kingstown travel league so the girls would gain competitive experience.

Maguire said the girls did an amazing job of playing against some of the tougher teams in the league, and she watched them grow more confident and skillful as the season progressed.

"We did not win a lot of games through the regular season, but the girls worked hard at practice, so come tournament time, it all paid off," Gaynor said.

The team entered the 9-yearold tournament with a bang, toppling Smithfield on Friday night. The girls lost a tough game to top seed North Kingstown on Saturday morning, but rebounded for a win on Saturday afternoon against Ponagansett. The two wins put them in the championship game on Sunday for a rematch against North Kingstown.

The second time around Jamestown the girls' persistence earned them a 1-point win over North Kingstown and the championship crown.
