'Sam's Cats' visit the Press

Sam Ackerman Sam Ackerman This week we are introducing "Sam's Cats" to the Jamestown Press. The cartoon is drawn by Sam Ackerman, a former Jamestown resident who remains a frequent visitor to the island.

Sam was raised in Arlington, Mass., and attended the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with a degree in illustration. He lived in Jamestown from 2000 to 2005. "I did mostly landscaping while living there and sold art work on the side," he says. "The final year while living in Jamestown I worked across the bridge at Arnold Gallery. I also worked at the Jamestown toll booth rolling tokens."

Sam said he grew up with dogs and cats, and currently has two cats. "I draw cats as they are a little more mischievious than dogs. If I left my car keys out, my dog might just chew on them, where my cat would probably take a trip to Providence," he says.

Sam's mother, Abby Campbell King, lives in Jamestown and his sister in Newport.

He will publish his first book of cartoons this spring. Visit his website at samscats.com.
