Violet L. Doty, 97

Violet L. Doty (Lee), 97, of Union Street, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late John J. Doty Sr. and the former wife of the late Charles Hayward.

A lifelong resident of Jamestown, she was a daughter of the late William and Pearl (Mitchell) Lee.

Mrs. Doty was the owner of Doty's Variety Store for 36 years, retiring in 1966; during this time she developed a love for photography and took many pictures of Jamestown which some were made into postcards. Many of these historical photographs are used today. She also worked a few seasons at the Jamestown Theatre selling tickets.

Mrs. Doty enjoyed cooking, knitting, gardening and her cats. She was an avid reader.

She leaves two children, John J. Doty Jr. and Nancy L. Frade both of Jamestown; a half-brother, Roy Johnston in Florida; and a granddaughter, Melissa McNaughton of Kingston. She was the grandmother of the late Marc D. Frade.

Her funeral and burial will be private.
