Leighton C. Wood, 88

Leighton C. "Huck" Wood, a longtime resident of New Canaan, Conn. died Sunday, March 22. He was 88.

Mr. Wood was the son of Captain Leighton Basil Wood and Angela Fitzgerald.

Born on May 28, 1920, he graduated from the University of Alabama in 1941, and the Northwestern University Advanced Management Class. He was captain and number one player on the varsity tennis team and was an athletic department tutor junior and senior years.

In June 1941 he joined IBM Corporation and was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. On December 8, 1941 he was ordered to active duty, and assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Training School at Melville, R.I. Upon graduating, he was assigned to MTB squadron 6 outfitting at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1942. He continued to serve with motor torpedo boats, fighting in the three Solomon Island campaigns, the Philippines and Borneo. He earned five battle stars and the Silver Star.

In November of 1945, he married Barbara Brandt Wood, also an officer in the USNR.

After the war he returned to IBM as a salesman and held sales management positions in Boston, New Haven, New York City and Pittsburgh, Penn. He then moved to corporate headquarters with the IBM DP Group holding various positions including manager of product testing and development, director of information, product security and source planning. He retired in 1982.

He was active in the New Canaan Public Schools including starting the Touch the Future Program. He provided leadership in various civic and social organizations including serving as the president of VITAM, a drug rehabilitation center in Fairfield, Conn., president of Peter Tare, an alumni organization of former USN PT boat officers, president of the Country Club of New Canaan, organizer and co-chairman of the Southern New England Junior Tennis Tournament, flag offi cer of the Conanicut Yacht Club in Jamestown, member of the New Canaan Park and Recreation Dept. and president of the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan.

In addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, he is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws plus six grandchildren: Christopher and Sarah Wood of Morgan Hill, Calif. and children Meghan and Liza, Edmund and Christina Wood of New York City and children Katarina and Sebastian, and Alexander and Bambi Wood of Jamestown, and children Brooke and Todd.
