Children's story times at the library
      The Jamestown library children's room will hold story times in April and May. On Wednesdays, the library will hold Mother Goose Time for infants and babies up through 24 months old, from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. It will involve the child and adult in stories, finger rhymes, interactive songs and a coloring project.

      Applications are now available for the Elizabeth Stone Fund Scholarship, a one-time award for expenses associated with freshman year at an accredited four-year institution of higher learning.

Driving course offered for seniors
      AARP will offer a two-session afternoon defensive driving course for seniors on Wednesday, April 15 and Friday, April 17. The classroom course will provide Rhode Island drivers, ages 55 and older, a review of driving skills and techniques, as well as strategies and tips to help adjust to normal age-related physical changes that may affect driving ability.

All aboard for train program at the library
      Train fans of all ages can come together to see model trains, hear train stories, meet other train lovers, and learn about safety around the tracks from representatives Jack McCabe and Archie Clarke, of Rhode Island Operation Lifesaver, at the Jamestown library.

Strings ensemble forming at rec center
      The Jamestown Recreation Department will start a String Ensemble on Tuesday, April 21, for anyone who plays violin, viola, cello and double bass. The ensemble will be directed by Susan Gorelick. It will be an eight-week session, meeting every Tuesday starting April 21 through June 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The group will not meet May 21.

Apply for Holy Ghost Society scholarship
      The Holy Ghost Society will award two scholarships to graduating high school students who live in Jamestown, to be applied to tuition, books or related course fees. Students must be of Portuguese heritage. Scholarship applications may be obtained at the Jamestown Philomenian Library, 26 North Main Rd.

Learn about Rose Island Lighthouse
      Children can learn more about Rose Island Lighthouse and the environment on Rose Island during the Jamestown library's free, hour-long, hands-on program on Tuesday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program is for children ages 4 years and older and will feature a reading and a "tour" of the 10-foot-tall solar-powered lighthouse model.

Community theatre offers scholarships
      The Jamestown Community Theatre will present two $1,000 awards to graduating seniors for achievement in theater and performing arts. The awards will be made on the basis of an essay not to exceed 500 words that describes the student's involvement in theatre and/ or performing arts.

Get ready for annual Easter egg hunt
      The Jamestown Women's Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11, on the Shoreby Hill Green beginning promptly at 10 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Participants will be divided into groups: pre-K and kindergarten, first and second grades, and third and fourth grades. Fifth and sixth grades will have an egg toss.

CIAA seeks off-island scenes for next show
      The Conanicut Island Art Association is seeking artwork for its next open, non-juried show, 'Anywhere But Here,' which will feature scenes from anywhere but Jamestown. Drop off for the show is Thursday, April 16, from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Jamestown Town Hall.

Ackerman book next on list for discussion
      The Jamestown Book Discussion groups will read the "The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story," by Diane Ackerman on Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, April 21, at 1 p.m. The Jamestown library runs two book discussions. Meetings are the third week of the month. The evening group meets on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

Kids of ages invited to after-school programs
      The Jamestown Education Foundation and the Jamestown School Department will offer a series of after-school programs for children this spring. Programs are offered for all grade levels for the children of Jamestown. The six-to eight-week session begins Monday, April 20. While many of the programs are offered at no cost, some programs may have a nominal fee for materials.

Churches announce Holy Week services
      Central Baptist Church The Central Baptist Church congregation will begin its Holy Week observance on Maundy Thursday, April 9, with a service of communion and Tenebrae at 7:30 p.m. The first portion of the service will center on remembering and reenacting the last meal that Jesus shared with his disciples.

Sailing team looking for unused or unneeded sailing gear for yard sale
      As the season for uncovering boats and preparing for the upcoming sailing season approaches, the North Kingstown High School Sailing Team is asking island residents to donate nautical items that are no longer of use. The sailing team will take the items as donations for the NKHS Sailing Team Nautical Yard Sale.
