Register now for girl's softball

The Jamestown Recreation Department is getting ready for the girl's softball season.

There will be an Instructional League for first and second grades, a Junior League for third and fourth grades, and a Senior League for grades five through eight. A travel team is planned for girls ages 9-12.

Softball starts on Tuesday May 5. Parent coaches and volunteers are still needed. The deadline for player registration is Monday April 20.

Season opener for Jamestown Golf Club

Paid-up members of the Jamestown Golf Club will open their season with an individual net tournament at Jamestown Golf Course on Saturday, April 18. The first tee time is 10 a.m. Members must register before 9:30 a.m. to be eligible to play.

A sign-up sheet is available in the clubhouse. Foursomes will be determined by a blind draw. Greens fees are not included in the $10 entry cost.

It is not too late become a member. Jamestown Golf Club is open to men, women, and junior golfers. Information is available at Jamestown Golf Course. The club is a member of the Rhode Island Golf Association, which is the umbrella organization for the promotion of golf in Rhode Island and is the local arm of the U.S. Golf Association.

Learn winch maintenance at boating seminar

Save money this season by learning the skills necessary to maintain the winches on your sailboat! On Saturday, April 18, at 10 a.m., Confident Captain/Ocean Pros will host a specialized lecture that will help locals understand the basics of winch maintenance and repair.

This is part of Confident Captain's free lecture series. Mike Lee from Harken will give a hands-on lecture during which participants will disassemble, assemble, and service winches.

The lecture will be held at the new Confident Captain/Ocean Pros office in the recently renovated Aquidneck Mill Building at 449 Thames St. Suite 300 in Newport.
