Look for the town budget in this issue of the Press
It's here! The annual proposed budget for the Town of Jamestown is complete and ready for your consideration.
The annual budget publication of the Town and the Jamestown School Department has been inserted into this issue of the Jamestown Press. (You'll only find the budget in those copies of the Press that are mailed to every postal patron on the island!)
Be sure to save your copy of the budget and bring it to the annual Financial Town Meeting on Monday, June 1. The FTM starts at 7 p.m. and will be held, as in past years, at the Lawn Avenue School. All registered voters are urged to attend.
The Town Council and the School Committee are to be commended for their hard work on the new budget. These are tough times. There's a recession raging around the world. The economy has affected all of us, some more so than others. It is good to see that our local government is doing its part to ease the pain.
The most notable aspect of the proposed budget is that it represents a 0 percent tax increase for the average taxpayer. That means, given that there are no unexpected changes in our town's fiscal outlook, that we'll be paying the same amount on our tax bills.
That's quite an accomplishment and was not an easy task, considering that our town and school's annual combined budget exceeds $18 million.
There will be extra copies of the Town Budget available at the Town Hall and at the Jamestown Press office.
