Members and guests will be treated to wine and cheese in the grand USTA room and complimentary audio tours of the museum.
Doug Stark, museum director, will give a brief overview of the 1880's structure, designed by the firm of McKim, Mead and White. A sneak peak into the ancient and venerable Court Tennis facilities will provide an interesting preface to the precursor to the game we now know as tennis (or lawn tennis).
The museum's galleries chronicle the rich history of tennis through interactive exhibits, dynamic videos, and popular memorabilia from historic champions and the superstars of today. Dramatically set in the original club rooms of the Casino, visitors of all ages delight in Stanford White's architectural detail as well as the state-of-the-art gallery experience.
The Jamestown Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving, collecting and sharing our island's history. Founded in 1912, the JHS maintains and operates the Jamestown Museum and three 18th century historic sites: the Windmill, the Quaker Meetinghouse and the Conanicut Battery, all of which are open to the public. JHS is a valuable resource for students, educators, historians and anyone interested in learning more about the area's rich heritage. Call 423-0784.
