E-ZPass system a success

RITBA continues to redeem old tokens

These Pell Newport Bridge toll collectors show off just a small sample of the tokens redeemed so far. About 200,000 have been redeemed to date. Together the three RITBA employees have 76 years experience at the bridge. All three said they are glad the token days were behind them. Photo by Jeff McDonough E-ZPass transponder sales at the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority have far exceeded what consultants estimated before the rollout of the program last year.

To date, more than 52,000 transponders have been sold, affirming that Rhode Islanders have readily embraced the E-ZPass system on the Newport Bridge.

The E-ZPass office sales hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proof of R.I. residency is required whether the transponders are purchased in person or at www.ritba.org.

You'll want to get your transponder next week, because beginning June 1, the price of the transponders goes up. The transponders will be sold at cost, which is $20.95 for interior mounts and $33.04 for exterior or roof mounts.

Last year, the board of directors of RITBA voted to offer a discounted, "early bird" price for the transponders during the implementation period. The subsidized offer as well as the credit for outof state transponders will expire on June 1.

Tokens will continue to be accepted at the RITBA headquarters and E-ZPass office. Each token may be redeemed to 83 cents.
