Go to the Financial Town Meeting Monday at Lawn Avenue School
The annual Financial Town Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 1, at the Lawn Avenue School. The meeting is presided over by the Town Moderator.
Jamestown voters will be asked to approve the Town Council recommended $8,373,981 town budget for the fiscal year of July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010.
The School Committee is asking voters to approve its proposed $12,531,883 budget for the same time period.
"This is a maintenance of effort budget," Town Administrator Bruce Keiser said. "We have not added any new programs except for the Teen Center because the Rhode Island Foundation grant that funded it has expired."
Keiser said the budget was lean, but that everyone involved did their part to ensure a zero percent tax increase to Jamestown residents.
"The only problem may be that the state has not made its final decision on what the state aid numbers to cities and towns will be. If there is a decrease in the level of state aid, that will make it more difficult to balance the budget later in the year," Keiser said.
Only registered Jamestown voters are allowed to vote at the Financial Town Meeting. Speakers will be allowed three minutes to make their presentations.
