Hunt work is the focus of preservation lecture
      The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a lecture by architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson, Ph.D, on the life and work of iconic American architect Richard Morris Hunt tonight, Thursday, June 4, in the Great Hall of one of Hunt's greatest creations, The Breakers.

Newport Hospital nurses earn health care's most coveted recognition
      Newport Hospital was notified this week that it has received redesignation of the prestigious Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Only 2 percent of hospitals in the United States achieve designation more than once.

Yacht school graduates showcase works
      At most graduation ceremonies, students take diplomas in hand. At the International Yacht Restoration School, they pick up tillers and go sailing. On Saturday, June 6, IYRS students will mark their graduation from the school's two full-time programs by showcasing their work and launching the boats they spent the past year restoring.

Help local raise money to teach in Africa
      Jacquelyn Stoeckle of Jamestown will spend a year volunteering as a teacher in Tanzania. Stoeckle is part of a group of volunteers with Visions in Action, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that sends volunteers to Africa to work with local development organizations.

      Republicans and Independents of Jamestown are invited to attend an introductory meeting for a new coalition of Republican and Independent voters at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, at the Senior Center on West Street.

Driver's education offered in Jamestown
      CCRI Driver's Education classes taught by Jim Barron will be offered at the Jamestown Fire Station beginning on Monday, June 15 and running through Friday, July 17. The class will meet on Monday and Friday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Students must be 15 years, 10 months old by the first class to be able to participate.

Join the Jamestown Community band
      The Jamestown Community Band is busy rehearsing in preparation for its summer schedule of concerts. The band will march in the annual North End Fourth of July parade which starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 4. The band will also perform at the Rocket Hogs' fireworks display on Sunday, July 5, at Mackerel Cove.

Dodgeball tournament to be held next week
      The Teen Center's Youth Advisory Board, AMPT and Jamestown's seventh grade Teen Institute 2009 participants will host a dodgeball tournament at the Recreation Center on Thursday, June 11, at 3:30 p.m. All students in grades 5 through 8 are welcome to participate. Teams are to have eight members and have some sort of uniform.

CIAA seeks artists for 'Icons of Jamestown'
      Artists are invited to submit their work to the Conanicut Island Art Association's upcoming "Icons of Jamestown" show. Members, non-members and non-Jamestown residents are welcome to submit their work. "Icons of Jamestown" will open Thursday, June 25, at Jamestown Town Hall Gallery.

Ali's run race is this Sunday at Ft. Getty
      The 8th Annual Ali's Run will take place this Sunday, June 7. At 1 p.m. the 5K race will proceed from Fort Getty Park along Southwest Avenue to Narragansett Avenue. The course then turns east on Narragansett Avenue, right on Howland Avenue, south onto Hamilton and returns to Fort Getty via Beavertail Road.

Shred those important papers at Eco-Depot
      The Jamestown Chamber of Commerce will host a "shred it" day in conjunction with the Eco- Depot on Saturday, June 6, at the Melrose Avenue School. Affordable Shredding will donate its services. All Jamestowners are invited to bring no more than two boxes of paper such as financial records to be shredded at no charge.
