Take precautions to avoid mosquito-born illness

Pests in the garden
The Island Garden
      I was working the garden, but distracted by watching a squirrel. It was sitting in the walnut tree and calmly nibbling on the new nuts that were a mere eighth-inch long. When I shooed it out of the tree, it chattered and complained, running from branch to branch while I ineffectively shook the tree to try to get it away from the burgeoning nuts.

Turn in hazardous waste at Jamestown Eco-Depot
      Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation's Eco-Depot program will travel to Jamestown for a special East Bay collection on Saturday, June 6. Residents can drop off their household hazardous waste at the Melrose School parking lot at 76 Melrose Ave. between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., but appointments are necessary to reduce wait times.

Island oyster farmers plant the seeds for a cleaner bay
      Every spring Jamestown comes to life as cherry trees flower and gardens begin to bloom, contributing to the island's natural appeal. This year, 11 Jamestowner's are putting down their spades and concentrating gardening efforts to a more radical locale with larger implications: the Narragansett Bay.
