Central Baptist Church’s annual June Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, June 20, and will offer something for everyone. People interested in Red Sox baseball tickets, tap or ballroom dancing lessons, live lobsters, a day of kayaking, or yoga and Reiki sessions should visit the festival’s silent auction. Also included in the silent auction will be a framed set of photographs by Onne van der Wal, gift certificates from a variety of stories, tickets to area attractions and gift baskets. More ... The Conanicut Island Art Association invites all Jamestowners to the opening reception for its new show “Icons of Jamestown” at the Town Hall Gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 25. Refreshments are provided and there will be a cash bar. The Friends of the Jamestown Library’s program “People and Pets 101” uses hands-on materials to teach children how to be kind and respectful to animals. In celebration of its 60th year, the Quononoquott Garden Club will host “Island Treasures: A garden tour” on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eleven unique gardens in Jamestown will be featured. The gardens include a raised-bed vegetable garden, a cottage fairy garden, Victorian and English-type gardens and four seaside gardens. Also included on the tour will be an artist’s garden and the artist will offer a tour of her studio. Visitors will see a variety of fresh ideas to try in their gardens at their homes. More ... The Men’s Chorus of Jamestown will begin its summer rehearsals on Thursday, June 25. The chorus is open to all men and boys who enjoy singing. The group is directed by founder B.J. Whitehouse and sings only throughout the summer. The group wants to maintain a low-pressure, high quality singing experience for its membership. Political reporters Ian Donnis and Scott Mackay will discuss the use of wind power and its impact on the Ocean State with Providence Journal environmental reporter Peter Lord, R.I. Economic Development Corporation’s director of Renewable Energy Fund, Julian Dash and Paul Rich, chief development offi cer of Deepwater Wind. More ... The Jamestown Philomenian Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays during the summer starting on June 20. Sunday hours at the Jamestown library have ended for the season. Sunday hours will resume Sunday, Sept. 13. Sunday hours are made possible by a Rhode Island State grant in aid to libraries. Patrons should note that the Jamestown library will be closed on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, in observance of the Fourth of July. More ... Registrations are already pouring in for the Club 420 National Championships in Jamestown. “There could be as many as 150 to 180 boats registered by the first gun,” according to Nancy Lush, co chair for the event. “Each boat has a crew of two, and, counting coaches, family members and spectators, there could be as many as 600 to 1,000 people on the island for the three-day event.” More ... The Jamestown Education Foundation is co-sponsoring the Save The Bay Camp at Fort Getty with the Jamestown Recreation Department and Save the Bay. There are still spaces available for children entering grades 4 to 6. The camp experience involves exploration of the coast and a trip to Rose Island on the Save the Bay research vessel. Trained naturalists from Save the Bay work with students to explore the beaches, salt marshes, rocky shores, and shallows of our island. More ... Tours of Touro Synagogue, the oldest Jewish temple in the country, have resumed this summer after a brief hiatus caused by financial pressures over the winter. The Newport synagogue, built in 1759 and dedicated in 1763, serves Congregation Jeshuat Israel, which was first established in Newport in1658. Tours give visitors the opportunity to learn first-hand the synagogue’s history and the central role it played in the establishment of religious freedom and toleration in America. More ...
