Evtimov named to RWU dean’s list Vladimir Evtimov of Jamestown was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at Roger Williams University. Local garden club members win awards Several members of the Quononoquott Garden Club won awards at the 14th annual Newport Flower Show. This year’s theme was “Glorious Green,” symbolizing the green found in plants and that which helps the environment. Eight garden clubs were invited to compete. More ... Fifty-nine 8th grade students graduated from the Lawn Avenue School last Wednesday evening in a ceremony held in the school gymnasium that included memories, music and well-wishes from administrators. Principal Kathy Almanzor fought back tears as she urged the students to “be kind” as they move forward through life. Drug possession charges • Cash Pina, 18, of East Providence, was charged June 27 with first offense possession of marijuana and underage possession of alcohol. According to police, plain clothes officers working on underage drinking enforcement detail observed subjects smoking marijuana at Ft. Wetherill. Jamestowner and URI oceanographer Art Spivack commissioned a study last year to explore what Rhode Island might look like if global warming melted all the glaciers and ice sheets on Earth. The study produced a map showing a 220- foot rise in worldwide sea level that would put most of the state south and east of Route 95 under water–including every square inch of Jamestown. More ... After all, plants won’t grow well in sand, rocky ground or poor soil such as clay. “But how can you upgrade the soil?” was the next question.
