Thomas R. Oates

Thomas R. Oates died peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness on June 26 at his home in Jamestown.

Born in Providence to Robert C. and Margaret A. (Coffey) Oates, he is survived by his wife, Christina Seamans Oates; his children, Dr. Daniel J. Oates of Quincy, Mass., and Matthew J. Oates of Rochester, N.Y.; his stepchildren, Stephen J. Truhan of Longwood, Fla., and Dana R. Truhan of Foster; and his sister, Peg McGuirl, of Warwick.

He was appointed vice president and CFO of the University of Bridgeport in 2003. Prior to that, he served at Roger Williams University and the Papitto School of Law as CFO/VPFA (from 1994- 2002) and as controller (from 1986-1993).

From 1973-1985, he served in various finance and accountingrelated positions with the state of Rhode Island, Department of Mental Health Retardation & Hospitals and Woonsocket Hospital.

He held a M.B.A. from Bryant University and a B.S. from Roger Williams University. He was a certifi ed public accountant, and held professional memberships with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the National and Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers. He also served as a NEASC evaluator for finance and physical resources standards.

Tom was respected and adored by those he worked with and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Burial was in St. Mark Cemetery.
