Jim West’s favorite time in the U.S. Army was the 13 days he spent with the U.S. Navy. West, Jamestown’s oldest living veteran, spent 34 months in the Army during World War II in places like New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan, but it was the trip home from Japan aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, after the war was over, that was his most memorable. West was born in Jamestown in 1915 and lived on Old North Road, Narragansett Avenue and Cole Street before settling in his house on Greene Lane in 1940. More...

Dara Chadwick has been named editor of the Jamestown Press. She succeeds Adrienne Downing, who will resume her role as sports editor for the paper. A native Rhode Islander, Chadwick has lived in Jamestown for the past three years. More...

As many of you are aware, the Conanicut Yacht Club and Jamestown Yacht Club are hosting the Club 420 2009 National Regatta from Monday, July 27, through Wednesday, July 29, at Ft. Getty. Thank you to the large team of people that have been working on this event since December and the many more that have volunteered to help during the regatta. You can’t beat a system you can’t understand
I remember my father telling me that old chestnut, “Most people will not go for a day without breaking a law.” I do not doubt that he was correct. We have all stood in one place for a half-hour or more, waiting for a bus that was behind schedule. By doing so, we could have broken a loitering law. And how many of us have not damaged government property by walking on the grass in a public park? Whether we are aware of our transgressions does not matter. We more than likely broke a law. Don’t miss St. Matthew’s 78th annual Summer Fair this Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. The sale will feature the church’s famous lobster rolls, the Beech Tree grill serving homemade chowder, hot dogs and hamburgers, and a tropical tiki punch stand. A large selection of homebaked goods will be for sale. Calling all boat builders! Mark your calendar now for the 32nd annual Fools’ Rules Regatta, sponsored by the Jamestown Yacht Club. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, on the Town Beach at East Ferry. Participants will begin construction of the “vessels” with a 9 a.m. cannon start. Participants are given two hours to construct a sailing craft of nonmarine items. The craft may be pre-constructed, but must be disassembled and built again on the beach. Vincent Storey died on July 8, 2009, after a long struggle with a brain tumor. He passed away peacefully, and was surrounded by his family. Vin is survived by his sister, Terrie Storey of Jamestown; his brother, Thomas Storey of Warwick; his brother, Ronald Storey and his wife Donna of Smithfield; nieces Vanity, Jodi and MackEnzie; his aunt, Rosemary McGonigal of Jamestown; and his aunt, Marjorie Cooney of Narragansett. Additionally, he is survived by cousins Suzanne Vieira, Christine Greene and William Cooney, as well as other extended family members in Rhode Island. More...
