St. Matthew’s Church to hold 78th summer fair Saturday
      Don’t miss St. Matthew’s 78th annual Summer Fair this Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. The sale will feature the church’s famous lobster rolls, the Beech Tree grill serving homemade chowder, hot dogs and hamburgers, and a tropical tiki punch stand. A large selection of homebaked goods will be for sale. Children’s games, a selection of toys and books, household furniture, electronics, sporting goods, jewelry and attic treasures for all tastes and budgets will also be available.

Kickball game tonight will raise funds for teens
      The Teen Center will host an adults-only kickball game tonight – Thursday, July 16 – from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Jamestown baseball fields to raise money for Teen Center programs. Book sale continues during regular library hours
      It is not too late to pick up a great summer read. The James town library’s annual book sale continues during regular library hours until Friday, July 24. Some little-used and muchloved volumes are available at great prices. Prices are $2 for hardcover books, $1 for paperbacks, $1 for children’s hardcover books and 50 cents for children’s paperbacks. The sale also includes a table of Jamestown and Rhode Island history books.

Foisy to make Jamestown debut
      Summer music in Jamestown continues this Sunday, July 19, at 6:30 p.m. at East Ferry Memorial Square, with Garry Foisy making his Jamestown debut. Foisy, a singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist, has a strong personal style and a keen passion for vocals, harmony and meaningful lyrics. He has been playing, writing and performing throughout the New England area for more than 20 years. A member of the Rhode Island Songwriters Association, Foisy performs as a featured artist in concert auditoriums, cafés and coffee shops throughout New England.

Tour ‘master gardens’ this weekend with URI
      Gardeners trained through URI’s master gardener program will open 39 public and private gardens to the public during the organization’s fourth biennial “Gardening with the Masters,” this Saturday and Sunday, July 18- 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The event, Rhode Island’s only statewide garden tour, is sponsored by the URI Master Gardener Association, a 600-member allvolunteer service organization of certified URI master gardeners, whose mission focuses on education, outreach and sustainability.

Dedication planned for Seabee memorial
      On Friday, July 31, at 9 a.m., the public is invited to a dedication of the new Gulf War Seabee Memorial. Members of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 27 recently broke ground on the first non-military memorial to honor U.S. Navy Seabees killed in the Gulf Wars. The memorial is located on the grounds of the Seabee museum and memorial park in North Kingstown and will include a plaque honoring each fallen Seabee. It will also feature a flagpole donated by the Quonset Development Corporation.

Experience Civil War history at Fort Adams this weekend
      Head out to Fort Adams in Newport this Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19, to see Civil War history come alive. The Civil War living history weekend will feature a Civil War encampment at the historic fort. There will also be a demonstration of cannon fire and artillery drills, historic lectures and displays, battle reenactments, kids’ history games and a dress parade, among other events. Event hours are Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $5 for youth (6-17), $10 for adults and $25 per family.

Experience historic 19th century coaches in Newport
      Aug. 20 to 23 will mark the return of authentic 19th century coaches drawn by matched and highly-trained teams of horses to Newport for a Weekend of Coaching, hosted by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Enjoy free viewing of the colorful and historic coaches every day as they drive the streets of Newport and the grounds of the Newport Mansions, celebrating and preserving a century-old sporting tradition. Approximately a dozen coaching teams will come to Newport from around the country.

Got talent? Audition for island talent show
      Mark your calendar for the chance to audition for your turn at center stage. Auditions for the Jamestown Community Chorus’ 20th annual talent show will take place on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 17 and18, at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center. An accompanist will be available for the auditions. Past shows have featured singers, dancers, instrumentalists, storytellers and more.

Reading by local authors to benefit JAC
      On Saturday, July 25, islanders Leslie Banker and William Mullins will read from their book, “Brittania in Brief: The Scoop on All Things British,” at the Schock Gallery at 47 Conanicus Ave. The event, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., will benefit the Jamestown Arts Center. Church to discuss ‘Three Cups of Tea’
      On Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m., Central Baptist Church will host a book discussion on “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace, One School at a Time,” by Greg Mortenson. All are welcome at this discussion, which will focus on Mortenson’s efforts to build schools in some of the most impoverished and anti-American areas of the world, in hopes of achieving peace and understanding across cultural divides.

      The Jamestown Recreation Department will hold its annual children’s basketball camp from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lawn Avenue School. The camp is for boys and girls ages 6 to 13. Eric Bush, along with members of the town recreation staff, will run the camp. The registration fee is $30 per child. Chamber’s Ft. Getty dinner-dance to benefit island garden club
      Join the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce for its annual fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Fort Getty Pavilion. This year’s event, called “Dig It,” will include dinner by Chopmist Charlie’s, dessert from Spinnaker’s Cafe, and beer and wine. Live music will be provided by Forty Steps. The event will benefit the Quononoquott Garden Club.
