Dara Chadwick has been named editor of the Jamestown Press. She succeeds Adrienne Downing, who will resume her role as sports editor for the paper. A native Rhode Islander, Chadwick has lived in Jamestown for the past three years. More ... Seven lifeguards are responsible for keeping Mackerel Cove beachgoers safe this summer. Four of the guards patrolled the beach last year, while three are new to the job of lifeguarding. As the most experienced of the crew, Samantha Alger, 22, of North Kingstown became the head lifeguard this year. Alger, who has four years of lifeguarding experience at Mackerel Cove, was the assistant head lifeguard last summer. More ... This summer’s wet, cool weather may have some farmers wringing their hands, but not Bob Sutton. As manager of the Jamestown Community Farm, he knows that a nice stretch of good weather is all it takes to get things back on track. “The ground is wet, and the cold and the amount of rain have retarded some growth,” Sutton said. “But vegetables are hardy things. Several J-24s were heading upwind and had to contend with sailboats that were heading downwind. More ... More than 1,300 athletes from around the world flocked to Rhode Island last Sunday for the Amica Ironman competition, and several Jamestown residents were at the forefront of the action. The Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island was supposed to kick off Sunday morning at 6 a.m. with a 1.2-mile swim at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett, but the swim start was postponed because a storm early that morning left the seas unusually rough. The surf was so rough that race officials offered competitors a chance to opt out of the swim portion of the race. More ... |
