Jamestown team captures Newport Babe Ruth baseball championship
Jamestown’s Ali’s Run team won the Newport Babe Ruth Baseball Championship on July 9 at Cardine’s Field in Newport, with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the R&R Construction team.
This was was Ali’s Run first championship since the team entered the Newport league four years ago.
Marshall Vigneault pitched six strong innings and relief pitcher Dan Harpool shut down the opposition in the seventh inning. Offensive stars of the game included Drew MacIntyre, Dan Irwin, Christian Ellerbe, Ryan Southworth, Eric Stroud, Matt Rafanelli and Bruce Page. James Chamberlain, Graham Jamison, Alex Burke and Adam Southworth solidified the defense. First baseman Joe Reale, injured earlier in the season was there to lend bench support.
The victory was truly a team effort, and the win marked the first baseball championship for a Jamestown team in many years.
Team manager Jim Bryer was assisted by coaches Roland Vigneault, Bill Page, Tony Rafanelli, Andy MacIntyre and bat boy Brian Page. Team sponsor Maureen Dunn-Packer, in addition to many Jamestown fans, was on hand to enjoy the game.
