Register now for JSA fall soccer
      Registration for the Jamestown Soccer Association’s Fall 2009 recreation soccer league is now underway. All registrations are done online at www.jamestown-soccer. com. The website will direct users to a link for Youth Leagues USA, which includes the Jamestown soccer registration form.

Discount at Beavertail Lighthouse gift shop
      The Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association will offer a 10 percent discount on any one item purchased by visitors to the museum gift shop tomorrow, Aug. 7, in honor of National Lighthouse Day. The gift shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Beavertail Lighthouse.

Teen Center, police to sponsor Six Flags trip
      The Jamestown Police Benevolent Association and the Teen Center will host a trip for teens to Six Flags in Agawam, Mass., on Wednesday, Aug. 12. A coach bus will leave the Recreation Center at 7 a.m. and will return by 8 p.m. Cost per teen is $30, and lunch is included with admission to the park.

      The Jamestown Parks and Recreation department will present Jose Costa solo steel drum band this Sunday, Aug. 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at East Ferry Memorial Square. This free concert is part of the Summer Music in Jamestown series.

Island talent show tickets now available
      Advance tickets for the Jamestown Community Chorus’ 20th annual talent show on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Community Center are now available at Jamestown Hardware, Baker’s Pharmacy, and the Secret Garden. Tickets are $7 for general admission, and $5 for seniors and children. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the show.

Free women’s self-defense class
      Join blackbelts Liz Smith and Linda Haverty on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Country Club to learn the basics of self-defense. Participants will learn about avoiding dangerous situations, the use of everyday “weapons,” release techniques and basic strikes. This program is free for all participants.

BankNewport collects food donations for R.I. Food Bank
      Now through Aug. 22, all BankNewport branch offices will collect community donations of the non-perishable food items that are most needed at the R.I. Community Food Bank, including canned meats, soups, fruits and vegetables, as well as rice, cereals, peanut butter, beans and whole wheat pasta. Donations will be accepted during banking hours.

      Bring the family to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport on Saturday, Aug. 22, for Kids Day. Lions Club to co-sponsor steak fry
      The Jamestown Lions Club will co-sponsor a steak fry in honor of Leo J. Gracik Jr. on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Ft. Getty pavilion in Jamestown. The event is a benefit for the R.I. Lions Children With Cancer Fund. In addition to dinner, which will be served from 4 to 6 p.m., the event will include raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, an auction, music and volleyball.

      The annual Jamestown Seaside Family Cruise, featuring classic, custom and antique cars, will be held Sunday, Sept. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ft. Getty. Cars must be registered by 1 p.m. Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer will provide entertainment and refreshments will be available. Donation is $15 per vehicle and all proceeds will benefit local charities.
