Gilbert Stuart Museum to ‘raise the roof’

The Gilbert Stuart Museum will host “Raising the Roof,” its major summer fundraiser, on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the museum grounds. The event will feature a mix of Celtic, bluegrass and blues by the Sidewalk Stompers; a light supper and desserts with wine and beer; an art show and sale by participants in the museum’s artists-in-residence program, and a raffle and silent auction.

This fundraising event is in honor of Maxwell Mays, well-known and beloved Rhode Island artist, who will be hailed by fellow artist and muralist, Haley Bartlett. Bartlett is in the process of immortalizing the museum in paint, and prints of his work will be on view during the event.

Proceeds will be used to help restore the historic birthplace of one of the Colonial era’s foremost portrait painters, Gilbert Stuart. Stuart was a contemporary of six U.S. presidents, whom he knew and whose portraits he painted, including the depiction of George Washington that graces the U.S. $1 bill.

Tickets for the event, which will be held rain or shine, are $25 per person. Reservations are requested; call 294-3001.

The museum is located at 815 Gilbert Stuart Rd. in Saunderstown.
